. Here are two tall Kokeshi by Yamanaka Sanpei with his mark on the bottoms. They were purchased separately, but I see them as a male and female pair: the male is 12 1/2" high with broad shoulders and a straight hairline, and the female is 11 3/4" with a rounded body and hair parted in the center. They are heavy, weighing just above and below two pounds each. The rainbow colored bands around each of them are even nicer in real life than they are in photos. A lovely wood grain shows through on the body, and the natural color of the wood is visible where the applied color has thinned, especially on the shoulders. I view this as the normal wear (or patina) a piece acquires with age when it is handled and cared for over time. I also appreciate the way the wood grain of the heads is positioned. |
