I seem to be finding pairs of Kokeshi lately, and these are a wonderful 14 1/2" tall pair by Takahashi Tatsurou. I suppose they could be listed under creative, but to me they have a transitional feel that I associate with vintage Kokeshi. The bodies are cherry with the bark carved away from the center area which has been decorated with autumn leaf, plum, pine and bamboo designs in gold against a shiny black background. There is also calligraphy on each doll, and some day I'll find someone who can translate it for me. It would be pleasing to know if the inscriptions are related to each other.
