. This is the tallest Kokeshi in my collection, measuring 17 3/4" high. I think she looks elegant, like a sculpture in wood. The revealing, layered neckline of the kimono looks very Geisha-like to me. Unlike the traditional (Dento) Kokeshi who are made from one or two pieces, the creative (Sosaku) Kokeshi can have many parts which attach or fit together. This Kokeshi has six pieces. The inner robe and then the head fit down into the outer kimono, the upper and lower body are joined with a band and the hair piece is on the head. I love the contrast between the fine grained light wood and the heavily grained dark wood. The bottom has the impressed mark of Shouzan Shito (Shozan Shido). The mark and pictures of other Kokeshi he has made, including one similar to this one, can be seen in the Evans and Wolf book: Kokeshi, Wooden Treasures of Japan. |
