. One of the lovely things about collecting Kokeshi is that they can trigger a desire to learn more about some aspect of Japanese culture. This Kokeshi was identified as a Maiko or apprentice Geisha and I wanted to find out what made her more than just a woman with an umbrella. Two of the web sites I enjoyed because of the detailed articles and good photos were: sofieloafy.net/geishamain.htm and immortalgeisha.com/hairstyles_maiko.php (just cut and paste into your browser). Wikipedia also has a lot of information with references when you look up Geisha. I am really enjoying browsing the web reading articles, blogs, and looking at pictures about Geisha and related subjects. In a nutshell, yes, this Kokeshi has the red under-kimono, obi tied with long draping ends down the back, hair style with red and white ribbon, and black lacquered platform clogs that a Maiko would wear. Now I want to go back and watch Memoirs of a Geisha. :) |
