This is a well sculptured Meiji period Japanese bronze figure study of a woman walking a basket on her back. The modelling is extremely well done and portrays the fluid movement of the woman with her body leaning forward as the left foot starts forward for the next step. The woman's clothing, her hair, the woven basket and even her sandaled feet are very well detailed. The piece was made by Nyozan, according to the signature on the base of the piece, who was a noted Japanese sculpture. This bronze was made in 3 pieces - the woman, the basket and the base. The base and basket having been attached by rivets or some such method and have limited movement. This piece measures 11" tall and the base measures 5" by 4 1/2". It is hard to be sure but it appears that she had originally carried something in her left hand, perhaps a walking stick. The piece is in very good condition and there are no cracks, breaks or repairs. ...... $825.00 |
