. . This is a WWI trench knife - marked 'US 1918' - made for US troops by the French. From the little reading I've done regarding this weapon, the US didn't have a trench knife at the time and before the American company - LF&C - got production started, a French cutlery company, Society General, produced this model. In the scabbard - which is steel or iron, the piece is about 12 1/2" long. The knife is about 11 7/8" long with a 7" pointed, double-edged blade. The grip is about 4 3/4" long to the pommel bolt, it has a knuckle guard or 'knuckleduster' and the lettering 'US 1918' on one side. The only markings on the blade is that of a recumbant lion above the word 'AULION'. The piece is generally in nice condition. The blade has some oxidation, the edges are not real sharp but the point is, the brass grip has a couple of small dings and the scabbard shows oxidation. In fact, it looks like one would think a cared for, but used trench knife would look ...... SOLD |
