.Maria Magdalena Riedlin was one of a small number of women in the printing industry in the early 1700's. She worked in Munich and I have seen references to her work from 1712 to 1744. She made this book titled: "Publii Virgilii Maronis Opera cum interpretatione P. Caroli Ruaei Soc. Jesu in Notas redacta" which includes the three works of Virgil titled: Bucolica (Bucolicorum), Georgicon (Georgicorum), and Aeneidos (1066 pp), followed by "exercises" and multiple indexes (152 pp). The text is in Latin. The date on the title page is M. DCC. XXXV. (1735) and it states: Typis, Mariae Magdalenae Riedlin, Viduae. The book was sumptibus (paid for, published) by Joan. Andreae de la Haye Bibliopolae Academici Ingolftadii (Ingolstadt, Germany).
This is a single volume with a total of 1218 pages and it measures 4 1/4" wide x 6 5/8" high and about 2 3/4" front to back. The covers are leather and there are leather straps with brass fittings which hold the book securely closed. The covers are worn with damaged corners and the decorative end of one brass fitting is gone, but I see no repair or restoration. There is an inscription on the ffep and notations in the margins but no underlining. No library markings. The page edges are soiled and there is scattered foxing throughout, but the book has no musty odor. There are five binding splits. Pages 323 to 755 have arched away from the spine. Pages 741 to 754 are loose at the top but still attached at the bottom. One page and one page fore edge have been torn and repaired (with a type of glue?), there is a tear to one corner and there are creases to edges and corners throughout. Six pages have corners missing and one has a letter of text lost. Please see the photos and feel free to request additional views if needed to assess the condition ...... $1,575.00
