. This is a very nice Scottish Dirk with matching knife, fork and scabbard. The piece probably dates from the early 1800's and has the Thistle motif in the decorative silver pieces on the scabbard. The overall length, in scabbard, measures 19 1/4". The dirk measures 16 1/8", with a blade length of approx. 10 1/2". The grip is carved wood with silver at either end and a large amber coloured stone for the pommel. The blade has some light pitting, rubbing and oxidation. The small matching knife measures 7 3/8" with a blade length of 3 1/2". The hilt is the same as the dirk, only smaller - carved wood grip, silver fittings and a small amber coloured stone pommel. The knife had a small 'lever' at the side to catch on the edge of the scabbard and prevent loss but it is broken/lost. The blade of the knife is in nice condition with only minimal oxidation and a couple of tiny spots of pitting. The fork measures 6 5/8" and matches the dirk and knife. The fork has the lever on the side but the piece will no go all of the way into the scabbard to 'lock. The fork is in very good condition. The scabbard measures 13 7/8" long and appears to have tooled leather over wood with silver fittings. The throat fitting, with it's thistle design, has a belt/strap bar on the back and is missing a small securing nail in the front. The points for the knife and fork each have a 'slot' at the side of the top for access and to help prevent loss. The leather of the scabbard shows wear and rubbing of the back edges but no tears, damage or repairs. I have look carefully but I can not find any maker's marks or stamps of any type ...... SOLD |
