. . This is a wonderful "smoke set" with a tray, a tall round covered box for holding cigarettes, and an ashtray. The pieces are Chinese - ca. 1900, with brass bodies covered with cinnabar laquer, carved with a technique known as Guri; when the carving reveals alternating red and black layers. The carving is deep and the work is beautiful. The tray measures 10" x 5 3/4", the round box is 4 1/4" high x 2 3/4" at the widest and the ash tray is 1 1/2" high x 3 1/4" at the widest point. The pieces are all in amazing condition, but they could all use cleaning. The interior of the tray has a few minute splits and flakes but no losses, and the lacquered bottom of the tray has some irregularities and rubbing, but no chips or cracks. The other two pieces have blue enamel lining and bottoms, show some light use and the lid of the cigarette box has a shallow ding on the top edge ...... $110.00 |
