. . This is a very fine Japanese Kutani wine cup which stands 3 1/2" high and has a Kutani mark on the bottom. The scenes in reserves depict a man in western dress at a Red Cross field hospital on one side, and a group of men in uniform on the other. I have found reference to the founding of the Japan Red Cross Society in 1880's and that it joined the International Society in 1886. This cup seems to commemorate the early Red Cross in Japan, and there is calligraphy in the interior of the cup which probably explains the meaning of the scenes. The patterning between the reserves is lovely and detailed. There is some light wear to the gilt on the base, and a tiny amount of grit on the bottom, consistant with age ...... $100.00 |
