This is a very lovely Japanese lacquer on wood inro that probably dates to the Edo period. The scene on the front looks like a walled temple in the woods near a river. The arch leading to the temple is done in silver lacquer, as are the walls on either side of it. There is calligraphy in all 3 compartments of the inro but it hasn't been translated because it is 'old' writing. Each compartment is wonderfully lacquered. There are some tiny chips on the inside edges of each compartment 'lid', the bottom compartment has a couple of chips on the 'rim' and there is some chipping of the corners where the cord strings through. The second case has a slight hairline in the middle of the back side - probably due to the ojime striking it and a small circular loss on the top, again probably due to the ojime. All in all, this is a beautiful example of the art of Japanese lacquer and the piece is basically in very good condition.
