This is an extremely fine Golden Age Japanese cloisonne lidded container, probably used for incense or as a tea caddy. The piece, with lid, measures 4 7/8 inches high and is about 3 3/4 inches at the widest point. The hexagon body has a shield on each panel with a Phoenix alternating with either a Foo Lion or Dragon. The cloisons appear to be silver with a copper body and rims. The piece is not signed but ranks right up there with Namikawa and other Golden Age closionne artist pieces. As the last photo shows, there are a number of fine hairlines - 8 or so - on the bottom half on one panel (and a corresponding star shaped spot on the interior) and one that the fingernail will catch on but there are no missing areas of lacquer and no fills. Other than the hairlines, this piece, including the cloisoned lid is in excellent condition ......SOLD |
